OOC intro/mingle posts in Ethyraia serve a dual function as CR memes for current players. The hope is that this will encourage current players to scan through and greet our new players. Take this opportunity to get to know your fellow players, plan hatching log threads, check-in regarding the keeping of TDM threads (which can be made game canon), find plot hooks, and plan for future CR.

INFO: the cliffnotes version is think fantasy russia magneto, except instead of controlling magnetic fields, he controls shadows. oh, and he's a 500+ eldritch horror that sacrificed his humanity in a quest for power.
the slightly longer version is that the darkling is the military leader of a country called ravka, leading a military regiment known as the second army, which is composed entirely of what is referred to as "grisha". grisha are a lot like the benders in avatar. the darkling is a shadow summoner, a rare breed of grisha, and considered one of the strongest of his kind. for this reason, he's lived an unnaturally long life and has essentially been pretending to be his descendants on and off for centuries. why does this matter? because he's also the grisha that created the shadow fold, a dark swath of shadow (populated by gargoyle-like monsters) that separates east and west ravka. right now he's been telling everyone he wants to destroy it, but what he really wants is to weaponize it and use it to help him overthrow the ravkan monarchy and establish a grisha sovereign state.
he is ...just thrilled to be here, honestly.

SKILLS: he's coming in from a military and scholarly background, though his scholarly interests are largely in the field of esoteric magical bullshit. he's got some hand-to-hand skills but will largely default to using his powers to cut things in half.
PLANS/GOALS: his current goal is to figure out just what the hell has happened and if there's a way to reverse it, because he has a war to win. side perk is if he can convince his ex that he's actually not done an incredibly stupid thing while simultaneously convincing her that the stupid thing is maybe not that stupid?
otherwise my longer term goal is to have him pitch in and help, genuinely. right now he's in a weird place where he's gradually finding himself questioning some of his ideas about people and the world and i'd like to dig into that and see just where that goes.
CR PREFERENCES: i'm fairly open at the moment.
MISC HOOKS: given that ravka's sort of on the cusp of becoming a steampunk world (or is it there already? idk) his knowledge of technology will be limited to start, but he adapts quickly. also see again the weird esoteric magic knowledge. oh, he's an amplifier? i'm not sure if this would work with non-grisha but it would be fun to try anyway???
NOTES: i do draw a little from the books (mostly the short stories and language of thorns) to pad out backstory but i do go out of my way to avoid spoilers.

Re: MAL
Balthier is in a place where he's really dealing with how he feels about wars, whether to fuck off and be a pirate or show up and fight/try to be a leader, and what morality even is so I think they could potentially have an interesting dynamic.

i'm looking forward to seeing how he fares against other powered people since magic is sort of a thing, but it's shady and not exactly spoken about, and yet there are now all these non grisha powered folk kicking around.
