player plot: stalk the thessyx
hello! it's tifa. i asked the mods on plot engagement about how it'd go if a band of merry hatchlings followed the thessyx as they left, in an attempt to find their city, and they gave us a lot to work with!
in short, we've got:
- 5 days round trip
- trapped in a sweaty dark cave together because of the rain
- new plants/animals (if we submit them)
- creepy mutilated animals!
- a thessyx npc (found by one lucky randomized participant!)
- a poll on what to do about them!
they asked me to make an ooc sign-up post (and there will be a paired mingle log if people want one?) in case anyone who isn't in the discord / on my plurk wants to join in. the full information is below, largely copy-pasted from the mods! please feel free to use this as a plotting post.
ETA 1: (as a note, the mods ALSO included this: We are including more details in this than we have with previous tier III as part of our game-wide attempts to generate more for people to engage with. This level of detail will be reflective of our future attempts as well and is not specific or limited to what you have brought to us for this tier. so go get your tier 3 player plot on.)
ETA 2: handy links: bestiary

the ic info;
the journey there
Following the trail left by the Thessyx (who were not, in fact, terribly subtle) will take 5 days of travel (depending on weather and pace) out and back (August 1st - 5th). There is initially no set 'path' that they seem to be following, but the Thessyx will eventually join what seems like a migration or herd route of some kind... almost like a road. It is well-trodden pathway with a variety of animal prints. The Thessyx's prints may be harder to track here — we hope you brought someone experienced in this sort of thing!
If there are specific animal or plant encounters you would like to see (or effects you'd like to use!), we would absolutely encourage you to hit our bestiary page! If not, there are a variety of creatures and plants there already that may suit what you're looking for! (Alternately, we could help brainstorm!)
The terrain is fairly easily traversed for the most part so long as they stick to the path, with scrub brush, nearly no above-ground water supplies. The visibility is good for quite a distance, so they shouldn't be snuck up on! (Unless you wish to design an ambush hunter!)
The Thessyx's trail will go cold at the side of a mountain, as if they simply vanished or teleported.
exciting discoveries
1. They will find evidence of animals being butchered along the roadside. This does not seem to have been done with the fastidiousness and care that the Thessyx showed their food preparation, and it's weeks older than their passage through here...
2. On their way out (day 2 or 3), they will be surprised by a sudden downpour of acid rain. They are welcome to take shelter in a cave! This cave has paintings on the walls that appear absolutely ancient — they have images on the walls that seem to be of dragons drawn to massive scale (these 'dragons' will take up much of the wall and some of the ceiling!) and there are also creatures that look quite like the Thessyx themselves... and there are other drawings that don't seem to match them? These other figures are taller, with flatter heads and broader limbs. This picture seems to depict all the creatures getting along harmoniously.
3. While they are in the cave, one person (please select them randomly!) can wander deeper into the (very extensive cave), and come across an ancient Thessyx, curled up in a corner. They seem feeble and malnourished, and if this PC opts to engage with them, it will communicate to them telepathically that all elderly Thessyx leave their subterranean city to go and 'join the ocean' on a final journey. However, this Thessyx does not think it will make it, and seems to lament this fact. Here, you have an option: The characters can bring the Thessyx with them (which will slow them down) or one (or two) characters can ICly volunteer to bring it to the Basecamp. If you'd like, when you do an OOC post we can do a poll to see which outcome everyone wishes to choose!
thessyx npc sign-ups & poll
based on item #3 above, we are gonna have a randomizer and a poll! i'll put these in comments. everyone who is going can vote in the poll. if you'd like to be the one to come across the thessyx npc, please sign up by august 1st and i'll randomize then. (i will be sitting out the randomizer for fairness.)

(those may be either pros or cons, not sure)
VOTE
(2) bring them along towards the thessyx city; or
(3) send two people home to basecamp with them?
comment under a sub-header to reflect your vote. (if voting for #3, pls say something if you want your character to be the one to turn back with them.)

Sidebar: Balthier does have his two-seat hovercraft he can bring (and would volunteer it ahead of time). He's the only one who can drive it, but it could be used to carry supplies, injured people, or ancient Thessyx.

3… ish.
Elderly Northerners, in bad winters, sometimes go “hunting” (with the intention of dying in the snow so they won’t be a burden on their clan). He’d assume this is something similar.
3.... with a question about a potential outcome 4?
sending someone back who's cultural practice it is to leave their people when nearing death seems disrespectful to Sam, so he'd offer to carry the thessyx back to basecamp.
However, if possible depending on how far the distance and what the thessyx thinks of the option, he would like to float the option of 'I have acid resistant wings, is it feasible to fly them to the ocean' so they can pass away in peace, to at least be investigated for how feasible it might be and if the thessyx would want that.

alina starkov (shadow and bone)
alina will be:
(1) using her powers as a rain shield as long as possible, which can cover 1-2 other people;
(2) grouchy about being stuck in the cave! they are losing time!! they could be going to catch up with the thessyx!!!!
(3) intensely creeped out by animal carcasses and acting like an idiot in a horror movie like WE ARE GOING ON ANYWAY
(4) trapped in inconsolable denial about losing the thessyx trail and sour at tracker friends
please holler at me here if you want me to do a mingle log with a timeline and some descriptions on it AND/OR a network post announcing her intention and inviting people to join. otherwise i'm just kinda assuming word of mouth gets around and people will make their own open logs?

the darkling (shadow and bone)
these are pretty rough and am definitely open to discussing alternative scenarios if none of these tickle your pickle.

Nina Zenik
1. Doing her very best to be blocking Kirigan's line of sight toward Matthias at all times. 8| She'll be subtle and casual about this, but consistent, so it could very well be noticeable to those paying attention to such things.
2. Not exactly enthusiastic about what they're doing, but not complaining about it either. She hasn't been out since the rat warren, so she'll be curiously glancing about.
3. The cave's fascinating; it tells her more about this place than anything she's seen so far. She'll spend a good deal of time studying the walls.
4. She's gonna super hate the animal carcasses and will be VERY ready to go back to base camp once they lose the trail.
Possible plot points are:
- Got injured? Want a healer? 🙋♀️
- Her powers don't work on animals, but she is a skilled combatant and she has a Grisha-forged knife, all the same it's entirely possible she's gonna need some help against some monsters.
- The giant white wolf is mostly going to be working with Matthias, but he'll also be bothering Nina occasionally
- Hit me up with anything else!
