[Lance, for as much as it vaguely annoys him when people think he needs protecting, also very purposefully cultivates that perception of himself to an extent. Because he disengages from any sort of violent conflict at first opportunity, he rarely has to show any skill he does have in the area, and that tends to give him the element of surprise when he does end up in a fight.
