[ No, Nina doesn't know if he'll listen either. He definitely won't be pleased with her. And she's not entirely sure what she can do to stop him, but she knows she won't let him hurt Matthias. She knows that the general finds her useful, and he won't want to sacrifice his only Heartrender - as far as she can tell, her only chance to keep him from killing Matthias outright is to make it perfectly clear that their usefulness is linked...

But just linked. Because she knows that Matthias will never, in any way, agree to any sort of servitude to the general or for Ravka, just as he'd learned that she would rather die than betray her people. She can't promise Kirigan Matthias' service in exchange, so she can only hope to point him to the fact that there is no Ravka here, no Fjerda, no war.

She doesn't know if it's going to be enough. She can only try. It would help, she thinks, if the sun summoner tried with her, but she knows she's got no right to ask Alina that.

Her expression immediately sobers, like a curtain dropped over a window. ]

Certain enough that I'll stake my life on it. I won't betray Ravka, but I can't have Matthias be hurt either.
